Bed / Dwelling / Work / City

Bed' is a strange word! If we don't use an article, it means a place the place we sleep, not a particular object:

- The children are in mattress.
- We didn't get out of mattress until after one o'clock.
- She obtained dwelling and went straight to mattress.


- She sat on the mattress in my room [I choose 'the' because the listener is aware of which bed I imply].
- I want to purchase a new bed [I choose 'a' because I do not know which mattress yet, I am not speaking about a specific one].

House

The phrase 'house' is also a bit strange. We usually use 'no article':

- They went dwelling.*
- I stayed at residence.
- Julie works from home.
- It is time to go residence.
- Lucy is at home in the meanwhile.


- We visited the home of Jackie Kennedy.
- My sister has made her flat into a beautiful residence.

Work (used as a noun)

When we use 'work' to mean a place, then we do not need to make use of an article:

- She's at work.
- I arrive at work at nine.
- We depart work daily at six.
- You need to go to work earlier.


- The work I am doing in the intervening time is very fascinating.

City

When we're thinking in regards to the city centre near to us, we often use 'no article' with sure expressions:

In city: John's in city in the meanwhile.
Go into city: Shall we go into town this afternoon?
Depart town: He left city after he argued with his wife.
