We use inversion in a number of completely different situations in English. Inversion simply means putting the verb earlier than the subject. We often do it in query kinds:
- Regular sentence: You are tired. (The topic is 'you'. It is before the verb 'are'.)
- Question form: Are you tired? (The verb 'are' is before the topic 'you'. They have changed places. This known as inversion.)
- Current simple with 'be': am I / are you / is he
- Previous simple with 'be': were you / was she
- Present continuous: am I going / are you going
- Previous continuous: was he going / have been they going
- Present perfect: have we gone / has she gone
- Present excellent steady: has she been going / have they been going
- Past good: had you gone
- Previous good steady: had he been going
- Future easy: will they go
- Future continuous: will you be going
- Future excellent: will they've gone
- Future good continuous: will she have been going
- Modal verbs: ought to I go / would you go
- Present simple with any verb besides 'be' (add 'do' or 'does'): do you go / does he go
- Previous easy with any verb except 'be' (add 'did'): did we go / did they go
- Seldom have I seen such beautiful work.
('Seldom' is at first, so we use inversion. This sentence emphasizes what stunning work it is.)
- I've seldom seen such stunning work.
('Seldom' is in the normal place, so we don't use inversion. This is a normal sentence with no special emphasis.)
- Regular conditional: If I had been there, this problem wouldn't have happened.
- Conditional with inversion: Had I been there, this drawback wouldn't have happened.
- Regular conditional: If we had arrived sooner, we could have prevented this tragedy!
- Conditional with inversion: Had we arrived sooner, we might have prevented this tragedy!
- On the table was all the cash we had misplaced. (Normal sentence: All the cash we had misplaced was on the table.)
- Round the nook got here the knights. (Normal sentence: The knights came round the nook.)
- So beautiful was the lady that nobody may speak of anything. (Regular sentence: the woman was so stunning that no one may talk of anything else.)
